It was a big night for politics. In addition, a straw poll was done in the room that evening for the local races. For the Post 2 Board of Education poll, Brian did not win the most votes that night. He addresses that issue here:

“People are asking me about the straw poll at the recent Senate debate and why I came up short in that poll. And also my opponent is really trying to make some political hay over it – and I don’t blame him. He did win in that particular room, on that particular night – congratulations to him. But, as Paul Harvey always said…Here’s the rest of the story…

I had planned to go to the Senate debate, put on my “Official School Board Badge,” shake hands, and speak to as many folks as possible – “work the room” as it is sometimes stated. It’s not that I don’t enjoy those events. I love talking to the people and getting their feedback. However, my plans got changed when one of the High schools within the Post that I represent, Johnson high, played well into the state basketball tournament and had a playoff game on the same night at the same time.

There’s no way that I would make the decision to miss that game and not support those boys, and those coaches that I’ve known for so long. In my position on the Board, with the relationship I have with people in that school, it would have been absolutely wrong for me, as their Board Rep. to miss that game just to get to that Senate Debate and and make sure I did Okay in a straw poll that means little.

In other words, that night I was absent from the room where the poll was taken because I had to DO my job as a school board member rather than do the political thing to try to keep my job.” I’m convinced that the voters of Hall County would want me to place the responsibilities of my job and students above political maneuvering.

So, for all my supporters, I wouldn’t worry too much about a small straw poll in a room where I wasn’t even in attendance.”
